About
Where’s Katie Now is your go-to resource for all things Solo Female Travel in Europe.
NICE TO MEET YOU! I’M KATIE đ
I took my very first solo trip to Montreux, Switzerland at 18 years old and, to be honest, I was fully convinced I wouldnât even make it past the airport! I was painfully shy, socially anxious and overthinking absolutely everything (my Google search history can testify to that!) The idea of eating alone at a restaurant, navigating public transport in a busy foreign city, or even just being alone in the world for the first time felt way too big for me to deal with.
But I’d paid a lot of money (seriously, Switzerland is pricey!) and told all of my friends and family about it, so I got on that plane and did the thing scared – and it changed everything for me.
Since then, Iâve solo travelled to over 24 countries across Europe and have fallen in love with hundreds of cities, towns and villages all across the continent. My version of solo travel has definitely not looked like the polished trips you see on Instagram, but every moment I’ve experienced has been raw and real, and that makes it all the more magical. The kind of trips where you get lost on purpose, cry at sunsets (yes, really!), and surprise yourself daily with how capable you are.
Now, I run Whereâs Katie Now? – a blog for solo female travel in Europe, built with love for women exactly like us. The dreamers. The major overthinkers. The people who know they want more from life but arenât sure if theyâre brave enough (spoiler: we are all brave enough, I promise).
So whether youâre planning your first solo trip or just secretly Googling âhow to travel aloneâ between meetings, youâre so welcome here!

MY STORY
I didnât grow up thinking Iâd travel the world.
In fact, up until the night before my very first solo trip, I used to think solo travel was reserved for those fearless, extroverted girls who have it all figured out. That just wasnât me and, as a proud introvert, I didn’t want it to be.
Then, when I was 18, I bought a one-way ticket to Gibraltar – a tiny British overseas territory at the tip of Spain – blagged myself a job in marketing at an Estate Agent, a fancier apartment than my budget should’ve allowed, and moved there alone. I had no grand plan, just a gut feeling that I needed something different. I wanted freedom and a fresh start.
If you’re thinking ‘Katie, what are you talking about? That takes major confidence. You’re not an introvert.’ Let me tell you, I was completely terrified. I almost didnât go. And when I did go, I wasn’t happy. I developed severe eczema due to stress and cried on the daily.
I’m sorry! I bet that wasn’t the way you thought this story was going! But it does have a happy ending, because that one, shaky leap, changed my entire life and kickstarted my love of solo travel.
During my year in Gibraltar, I didn’t have anyone to rely on except for me. I had to learn to trust myself, enjoy my own company, find things to get up and out for. And for me, that was solo travel. Switzerland. Spain. France. Every trip made me stronger. Feel calmer. Feel more me.
Fast forward through the year, I quit my job, started my own successful creative copywriting business, moved back to the UK, and have spent my time since solo travelling the world.
And along the way, I realised something important: You donât have to be fearless to travel solo. You just have to be willing to try.

WHAT I BELIEVE IN
I wholeheartedly believe travel is not about ticking off landmarks or taking perfect photos (although trust me, me and my trusty camera still chase golden light like itâs our job!) Instead, after my experience in Gibraltar, I believe that what’s important is how travel makes you feel.
Hereâs what I stand for:
- Slow, soulful travel – The kind of trip that leaves time for reflection, spontaneity, and deep connection to a place.
- Honesty over perfection – Move over, Instagram, because real travel isnât always glamorous, and thatâs okay!
- Female empowerment – Solo travel helped me trust myself more than anything else ever has.
- Safety & self-trust – Because you can be careful and brave at the same time, in equal measure.
- Escaping the âshouldsâ – You donât have to do it like everyone else. You don’t have to visit that country or that city because everyone says you shoud. This is your trip, no one elses.
So what wonât you find here? Overly curated content or a pressure to see and do everything. That’s just not my vibe!

A FEW FUN FACTS ABOUT ME
Because weâre friends now, right? đ
đ¸ Iâm obsessed with travel photography and my camera is my most prized possession – but I never filter or edit my photos. I specifically chose a camera known for being true to life and our world is beautiful without the filters.
âď¸ Iâve been solo travelling for 4+ years and have never stayed in a hostel (I like my privacy, thanks!)
â Iâll always choose a quiet old town walk or sightseeing tour over a party or pub crawl.
𧳠Iâve solo travelled to 24 countries (and counting).
đ I have cried over sunsets on more than one occasion – it’s a bit embarrassing!
