Best Time to Visit Gibraltar (From Someone Who Lived There)
Figuring out the best time to visit Gibraltar can be surprisingly tricky – especially if you’re a solo traveller wanting a trip that feels relaxed, safe and actually enjoyable.
And the internet will throw every season at you like they’re all ideal! But the truth is some months are a definite win, while others are best left to the day-trippers and heat loving cruise crowds.
I lived in Gibraltar for over a year, and I’m going to be real with you: it’s one of those places where timing really matters. The weather can change quickly, the vibe shifts dramatically with the cruise ship schedules and yes, you’ll 100% feel the difference when 4,000 people suddenly roll in for the afternoon!
In this guide, I’ll break down exactly what each month in Gibraltar feels like, what to expect weather-wise, how crowded it gets and which seasons I’d actually go back for.

Where Is Gibraltar?
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on the southern tip of Spain, where Europe meets Africa, just across the sea. It’s tiny – just 6.7 square kilometres – but has so much to offer tourists in terms of scenery, unique culture and climate.
And because it’s so compact, just a short walk will take you from the bustling Main Street to the quieter paths of the Top of the Rock nature reserve. But this also means things like weather, wind and tourist traffic are felt way more strongly here than in bigger destinations.
Gibraltar also has that famous Mediterranean climate, but don’t expect the same predictability you’ll find across the border in Spain. The sea breeze and infamous Levante (which can bring thick cloud even on sunny days), make each day in Gibraltar feel unique in terms of weather and climate.
Katie’s Top Tip: Always check cruise schedules before planning your trip, if you have flexibility. Even a couple of big tour groups or one ship in port will make Gibraltar feel packed.
Winter in Gibraltar: December to February
Winter in Gibraltar is still mild, thanks to its Mediterranean location, but also very peaceful.
If you’re after quieter streets, much fewer cruise ships, cheaper accommodation and flights, and crowd-free exploring at popular tourist attractions like the Top of The Rock or Europa Point, winter is a great time to visit Gibraltar.
Gibraltar’s Winter Vibe
Think cool sea air, often misty mornings, and a true local feel to the streets. I found Gibraltar in winter to be peaceful and relaxed, with hardly any tourists or cruise ships at all – just locals going about their daily lives.
Gibraltar’s Winter Weather
Gibraltar in winter sees a fair amount of rain. The wettest month is in December and throughout the winter there are an average of between 12-15 rainy days per month.
Winter is also the windiest season, with the windiest month being February.
Sunshine isn’t guaranteed on the daily in winter but when it does come out, it still feels warm.
Gibraltar’s Winter Temperatures
Gibraltar stays pretty mild in winter, with temperatures averaging between 11–17°C. But it does feel a lot colder than this when the Levante cloud comes across or if the wind picks up from the sea.
Events in Gibraltar in Winter
Life in Gibraltar is much more low-key in winter. December brings Christmas lights and a local market. But January and February are quiet and often free from major organised events.
Crowds in Gibraltar in Winter
Winter is the best season to experience Gibraltar without crowds. There are very few cruise ships and most tourists skip this season entirely (both in Gibraltar and Europe as a whole), making it the perfect season for solo travellers who value a peaceful experience over everything else.
Who Winter in Gibraltar is Best For
Gibraltar in winter is best for solo travellers who want peace and quiet to explore, a more local rather than touristy vibe, and some much-needed winter sunshine without going to a big resort town.
Downsides to Gibraltar in Winter
Some attractions or tours run on reduced hours or even close altogether during the winter season. The cable car in particular is less reliable during these months because of the wind.
Katie’s Top Tip: Bring layers, including a light waterproof and something windproof. Winter weather can switch moods very quickly in Gibraltar, especially in the Upper Rock area.

Gibraltar in December
December in Gibraltar is peaceful, festive and definitely unpredictable weather-wise, but it’s still a very charming and joyous season to visit in. I mean, who doesn’t love celebrating the festivities?!
Gibraltar’s December Vibe
You’ll get Christmas lights in Main Street, good deals in the shops for some last minute Christmas shopping, and tourist attractions that are super quiet. Despite December being a festive month, Gibraltar isn’t known for Christmas, so there are hardly any tourists or cruise ships.
Gibraltar’s December Weather
December is the month of grey skies and scattered showers. December is also Gibraltar’s rainiest month, with an average of 15 days of rainfall. Sunny days don’t feel too cold when you’re in the sun, but if that sun isn’t out it does feel chilly.
Gibraltar’s December Temperatures
Expect temperatures between 12–17°C with an average of 15°C. The evenings are colder though, and if there’s wind coming in off the sea that will make it feel a lot chillier.
Events in Gibraltar in December
Look out for the Christmas lights along Main Street, the local Christmas market in John Mackintosh Square, and a low-key New Year’s celebration.
Crowds in December in Winter
Low. There are much fewer visitors and many locals and expats (including myself when I was in Gibraltar!) travel home or abroad for the holidays during December.
Who December in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want a calm, more budget-friendly getaway to Gibraltar with a few local festive events thrown in.
Downsides to Gibraltar in December
If you’re visiting Gibraltar in late December, double-check shop, attraction and transport schedules around the holidays. Almost all close early or shut entirely from at least the 24th to the 26th.

Gibraltar in January
I found that January in Gibraltar is as close as you’ll get to having the place to yourself! There are no queues for attractions, accommodation is at its most affordable and again, there is a very local vibe.
Gibraltar’s January Vibe
January is a season to rest and slow down. Locals are starting to return from the holiday’s and ease back into work and routines after the Christmas break. Once again, there are hardly any cruise ships or tourists in Gibraltar in January.
Gibraltar’s January Weather
January is Gibraltar’s second rainiest month after December, with an average of 14 days of rainfall. You can also expect it to be pretty windy in Gibraltar in January. But you do start to see the return of crisp, blue skies, which is lovely to see!
Gibraltar’s January Temperatures
The temperature in Gibraltar in January averages between 11–16°C, which is the coldest of the year. The mean temperature in January is 14°C, so be sure to pack warm layers.
Events in Gibraltar in January
There’s not much going on event-wise, but that’s kind of the point of visiting Gibraltar in January. You’ve got room to slow down and explore the territory without anything going on or cruise ships docked in port.
Crowds in Gibraltar in January
Very low. January is peak off-season. And even popular attractions like the Top of The Rock and Europa Point are very quiet.
Who January in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want to explore Gibraltar’s top tourist attractions without any crowds, time to relax, and don’t mind about not having perfect Mediterranean weather.
Downsides to Gibraltar in January
January can feel a bit too quiet for some travellers, especially in the evenings. Some places close early, and nightlife is pretty much non-existent. It’s definitely not the right month for a social trip.
Katie’s Top Tip: January is ideal for slow travel in Gibraltar. So be prepared to embrace the slower rhythm of life in Gibraltar in January!

Gibraltar in February
February is still quiet, but you’ll start to feel the seasons shift. The air feels much fresher (but also windier), and there’s a definite sense that spring isn’t too far off now. You’ll also notice that tourism starts to pick back up around the schools’ February half term (which is at the same time in both the UK and Gibraltar).
Gibraltar’s February Vibe
Crisp days, some spectacular moody skies, and the gradual return of sunshine and slightly longer days, to remind you that spring is coming! Gibraltar is getting busier, especially around the school holidays, but overall its still a very quiet month.
Gibraltar’s February Weather
In February you’ll get a true mix of grey days but also bright blue, crisp days. The rain starts to ease up compared to December and January, but still averages around 12 days. February is Gibraltar’s windiest month with averages of 25mph.
Gibraltar’s February Temperatures
The temperature in Gibraltar in February averages between 12–17°C, so a bit higher than January. The mean temperature in February is still 14°C though, so be sure to still pack warm layers.
Events in Gibraltar in February
Gibraltar celebrates Valentine’s Day on February 14th, especially in restaurants and hotels, but other than that there are no major festivals or events. But keep in mind the February school half term dates (they’re the same in UK and Gibraltar), because then it will get busier.
Crowds in Gibraltar in February
Still low. February is, in my opinion, the best of the winter months for exploring while its still quiet, but also having better weather to enjoy it all.
Who February in Gibraltar is Best For
Nature lovers, hikers, photographers and any solo traveller looking to enjoy Gibraltar’s quieter side before the spring crowds return.
Downsides to Gibraltar in February
The wind is the biggest downside to visiting Gibraltar in February, as strong winds will affect the running of the popular cable car to the Top of The Rock.
Katie’s Top Tip: Don’t skip the Mediterranean Steps hike this time of year, if you want a challenge. It’s cool enough to enjoy the climb and clear enough for those stunning views – without anyone else in your photo!

Spring in Gibraltar: March to May
Spoiler alert: Spring in Gibraltar is definitely my favourite season! The days get longer, wildflowers bloom in the Upper Rock nature reserve, and the whole place territory feels like it’s waking up. You’ll still avoid the crazy summer crowds, but with much better weather than in winter. Win win!
Gibraltar’s Spring Vibe
Gibraltar in spring is still laid-back but slowly coming back to life. You’ll notice more visitors, the return of more regular cruise ships, sunnier days, and a perfect mix of locals and tourists out enjoying cafés, the nicer weather and even the beaches. But spring never feels as hectic or overwhelming as it does in summer.
Gibraltar’s Spring Weather
Spring weather in Gibraltar is much more predictable. Rain eases off after March and sunshine becomes a lot more reliable – although you can still get Levante at any time of year!
Gibraltar’s Spring Temperatures
Spring temperatures in Gibraltar average between 13–22°C, depending on the month. In general, temperatures will still feel cool in March, but by May you’ll definitely be in short sleeves.
Events in Gibraltar in Spring
Spring brings a few more local events and Easter celebrations are a highlight here.
Crowds in Gibraltar in Spring
In my experience, crowds begin to grow from late March onwards. This is especially true over the school Easter break, the Easter bank holidays and the May bank holidays, all of which Gibraltar and UK share. But it’s still nothing like the height of summer.
Who Spring in Gibraltar is Best For
Spring in Gibraltar is a great season for first-time visitors and anyone who wants warmth and nice weather, without the overwhelm of peak season.
Downsides to Gibraltar in Spring
Accommodation prices do start to climb around April and May, particularly during the school holidays. And some days may still be windy or unpredictable weather-wise (especially during early spring).
Katie’s Top Tip: Spring is the best time to visit Gibraltar if you want a little bit of everything – sunshine, walkability and a great mix of tourists and locals!

Gibraltar in March
March in Gibraltar shows the very first signs of spring. The skies start to clear (although those famous English spring showers do still affect Gibraltar!), and flowers just start to bloom on the Upper Rock.
Gibraltar’s March Vibe
March is peaceful but more energised than February. You’ll see people out hiking, café culture will return (especially around Ocean Village), and towards the end of the month you may even start to see the return of more frequent cruise ships, depending on the yearly schedule.
Gibraltar’s March Weather
There are more good days than bad in Gibraltar in March. Rain is still a feature of Gibraltar’s weather, with an average of 13 days in the month, but there are more clear, sunny days to balance it.
Gibraltar’s March Temperatures
Temperatures in Gibraltar in March average around 13–18°C, with a mean of 16°C. It can still feel chilly in the shade and in the evenings, but the sun is noticeably stronger and warmer in March.
Events in Gibraltar in March
Easter sometimes falls in late March, bringing religious events to Gibraltar’s churches and cathedrals which tourists are, of course, welcome to attend.
Crowds in Gibraltar in March
Still low but picking up slowly. You may start to see tour groups return, especially on the weekends. As well as the gradual uptick in the frequency of cruise ships in port.
Who March in Gibraltar is Best For
Travellers who want that early spring energy, but with still-quiet mornings and warm afternoons. March is great for hiking and photography.
Downsides to Gibraltar in March
There’s still a strong chance of unsettled weather and if Easter falls in March, it will get busy.
Katie’s Top Tip: Visit Gibraltar early in the month if you want maximum quiet before the Easter and UK school holiday visitors arrive.

Gibraltar in April
April is when Gibraltar starts to feel properly alive. The days are noticeably warmer and there are brighter skies – and there is also the return of more tourists, thanks to the Easter holidays and a continuing uptake of cruise ships in port.
Gibraltar’s April Vibe
Gibraltar in April (and especially at Easter), has a vibrant atmosphere but it’s still not as chaotic as the summer. Locals are out and about more, terraces at popular cafes in Queensway Quay and Ocean Village will fill up by mid-morning, and the Rock is alive with wildlife and flowers. It truly is beautiful!
Gibraltar’s April Weather
Gibraltar’s April weather is mostly sunny, with an average of 12 rainy days. (Don’t despair with the rain – the average is coming down slowly, trust me!) April is also less windy than in winter, and if it’s full sun (especially in the afternoon), you’ll definitely be able to get away with not wearing a jacket or long sleeves.
Gibraltar’s April Temperatures
The average temperature in Gibraltar in April is between 14–20°C, with a mean of 17°C. Days are definitely warming up but evenings will still feel chilly.
Events in Gibraltar in April
If Easter falls in April, you’ll get church services and local celebrations that you can, of course attend as a tourist.
Crowds in Gibraltar in April
Busier than March, especially around Easter and on the weekends (especially if they’re sunny!) But it’s still manageable and doesn’t spoil the atmosphere, even on the bank holidays.
Who April in Gibraltar is Best For
First-time visitors to Gibraltar, walkers, nature lovers or any traveller who wants a good mix of warm, sunny weather and lively atmosphere, without those full-on summer crowds.
Downsides to Gibraltar in April
If the Easter bank holiday lands in April (which it usually does), accommodation and flight prices spike and the town centre will definitely get hectic for a few days!
Katie’s Top Tip: Make sure you book your accommodation early for April, especially if you’re travelling around Easter.

Gibraltar in May
Ah, I love May in Gibraltar! Again, spoiler alert, this is my favourite month on the Rock. It’s warm (but not too hot), sunny, breezy and absolutely stunning. May is the true sweet spot before summer hits Gibraltar in full force.
Gibraltar’s May Vibe
I can only describe Gibraltar in May as pure joy! Everyone’s outside – both locals and tourists. And it’s the kind of month where you want to walk everywhere rather than getting the bus, or stop for ice cream or a morning coffee at an outdoor café, just because!
Gibraltar’s May Weather
With an average of 10 days of rainfall in May, Gibraltar is mostly dry. There is also lots of sunshine and longer evenings to explore, marvel at one of the many spectacular viewpoints, and even start to enjoy Gibraltar’s beaches. Plus, it’s perfect walking weather – sunny, but not yet unbearably hot.
Gibraltar’s May Temperatures
In May, the temperatures in Gibraltar average between 16–22°C, with a mean of 19°C. Like I said, you might even get the first proper beach day of the year!
Events in Gibraltar in May
May brings May Day and the Spring bank holiday to Gibraltar, which is always lively with both locals and tourists. The events calendar also fills up around this time, so be sure to check out what’s going on!
Crowds in Gibraltar in May
Gibraltar is definitely getting busier now. Cruise ships return in full force and May half term (both in UK and Gibraltar) brings a mini wave of visitors. Although it’s still not as bad as peak summer, and if you time your visit away from school holiday’s it’s even better!
Who May in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want the lively energy of summer without the heat or full-on crowds.
Downsides to Gibraltar in May
Prices are higher for both flights and accommodation in May. The Upper Rock nature reserve and the cable car will also get crowded during the school holidays, so expect queues.
Katie’s Top Tip: Visit in the first half of May if you want the sunshine without the school holiday surge. Oh, and be sure to get to the Top of The Rock early to avoid the midday tourist groups!

Summer in Gibraltar: June to August
If spring in Gibraltar is the perfect balance of buzz and quiet moments, summer is all buzz – and there’s no escaping it! This is when the Rock fully wakes up and welcomes the majority of its annual tourists. It’s hot, busy, bright and buzzing. Expect sunshine most days, the return of nightlife and outdoor dining, and also a perfect sea breeze to cool you off!
Gibraltar’s Summer Vibe
High energy, full of life and properly Mediterranean. Summer in Gibraltar is perfect if you love a lively atmosphere and don’t mind busyness or sometimes overwhelming heat.
Gibraltar’s Summer Weather
Gibraltar’s summer weather is sunny, dry and warm. You’ll hardly see any rain from June through August, with an average of between 1-3 days per month.
Gibraltar’s Summer Temperatures
The summer temperature in Gibraltar fluctuates between 18–28°C, with July and August bringing the hottest days of the year.
Events in Gibraltar in Summer
Summer is when the social calendar is most active, with everything from outdoor concerts to festivals and even a quirky cardboard boat race, so be sure to take a look online before you plan your trip!
Crowds in Gibraltar in Summer
Summer is Gibraltar’s peak season. Tourists arrive daily via cruise ships, day trips from Spain and flights, so expect queues at the big attractions.
Who Summer in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want almost guaranteed sunshine and a buzzy, summery atmosphere. This is a great time for beach lovers and more social travellers.
Downsides to Gibraltar in Summer
It’s hot. And I mean very hot. Walking uphill to the Rock in the middle of the day is no joke! I’ve done it once in 30°C… never again! Prices are also at their highest and queues are unavoidable.
Katie’s Top Tip: If you’re visiting in summer, head to the Upper Rock early and save your beach or siesta time for the midday heat.

Gibraltar in June
June is when the summer season in Gibraltar really gets started. The atmosphere is joyful, the temperatures are warm and the sky is mostly clear and sunny. If you’re going to visit Gibraltar during any of the summer months, June is the best one to pick as it’s not as busy as July and August.
Gibraltar’s June Vibe
Gibraltar is sociable, sunny, feels very relaxed and the people (both locals and tourists) are generally cheerful, out enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. Plus, June is the least overwhelming of the summer months, before the school holiday rush kicks in.
Gibraltar’s June Weather
June in Gibraltar is reliably dry and sunny, and also less windy. Rainfall in Gibraltar in June averages only 2–3 days for the entire month.
Gibraltar’s June Temperatures
The temperature in June averages between 18–25°C, with a mean of 22°C. I found that the heat was warm but not stifling, which is perfect for beach days and even some slower paced exploring of the town and the Rock.
Events in Gibraltar in June
Expect social and cultural events to ramp up in June. It’s definitely not as full-on as July, but things are definitely happening. Gibraltar has one bank holiday in June, for the King’s birthday on the 16th of the month.
Crowds in Gibraltar in June
June is noticeably busier than May, so you should expect to need to book accommodation early and wait in queues at top attractions. But it’s definitely not as busy as in July and August.
Who June in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want reliably great weather, beach days and a social atmosphere, but not those overwhelming, full-on July and August crowds.
Downsides to Gibraltar in June
The sunshine is strong and shade can be hard to come by, especially in the Upper Rock nature reserve. Be prepared with plenty of SPF and water!
Katie’s Top Tip: June is a great month to explore Gibraltar’s beautiful beaches. They’re warm enough to swim and sunbathe without getting chilly, but not yet overcrowded, especially on weekdays. Catalan Bay is very scenic and lovely in the mornings, Eastern Beach is bigger and great for plane spotting, and Camp Bay is perfect if you want a more social atmosphere!

Gibraltar in July
July is Gibraltar’s summer season in full swing. Think very hot days, bright blue skies and packed… everything! Outdoor dining, the beaches, major tourist attractions and Main Street are all very busy in July. In terms of temperature, the sea breeze does help, but the sun is strong and relentless and there isn’t much shade in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar’s July Vibe
Gibraltar is buzzing with a lively atmosphere in July and full of visitors (especially cruise ship tourists in for the day). The beaches are almost always busy and the overall vibe is joyful and summery.
Gibraltar’s July Weather
July in Gibraltar is very dry, with virtually no rain – only an average of 1 day out of the entire month. This is pure sunshine season!
Gibraltar’s July Temperatures
Expect 20–28°C days on average (although this can be higher), with a mean temperature of around 24°C. Just know that it feels a lot warmer in the sun, and while the sea breeze definitely helps with that, as I said there’s not a lot of shade in Gibraltar.
Events in Gibraltar in July
This is when the summer events calendar properly kicks off, so be sure to check out the local events listings before you travel. School summer holidays (for both the UK and Gibraltar), start around July 20th.
Crowds in Gibraltar in July
Very high. This is Gibraltar’s joint busiest month for tourism, alongside August. Tour groups, day trippers and cruise passengers all arrive in full force – and you will definitely feel it. As a local, it is very noticeable. The vibe completely changes and footfall skyrockets.
Who July in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who love the hustle and bustle of summer and don’t mind waiting longer for the cable car or sharing those iconic views with hundreds of other day trippers!
Downsides to Gibraltar in July
Everything gets busier, and accommodation and flight prices spike. You’ll need to book attractions and meals out ahead of time, especially on weekends and when the summer holidays start at the middle-end of July.
Katie’s Top Tip: If you’re up the Rock, visit St. Michael’s Cave during the hottest part of the day. It’s cool inside and beautifully lit, plus the evening cave concerts are a true Gibraltar hidden gem, if there’s one happening during your trip!

Gibraltar in August
August is on average the hottest month of the year in Gibraltar… and it definitely feels like it! Main Street is crazy busy, the beaches are full most days and the atmosphere is vibrant and social, but also very intense. A lot of locals leave Gibraltar in August to go on summer break elsewhere, and it shows.
Gibraltar’s August Vibe
Lively but also chaotic in places, especially when big cruise ships are in port. August in Gibraltar is all about sun, sea and beach days. Nightlife is also at its busiest in August.
Gibraltar’s August Weather
Almost no rain, with an average of just two days out of the month. August is dry, sunny and very hot. Levante (that cloud covering the rock), can still roll in at times though, which only makes the air feel more muggy.
Gibraltar’s August Temperatures
Temperatures in August average from 21–28°C and sometimes even higher. The mean temperature is 25°C. Humidity also rises to 73%, which is not fun if you want to explore the nature reserve!
Events in Gibraltar in August
National Day prep begins towards the end of August, local summer events are in full swing and the local beach scene is at its peak. The cardboard boat race is a fun and unique event to watch out for!
Plus, the schools are on holiday for the whole of August and the bank holiday at the end of the month is especially busy.
Crowds in Gibraltar in August
August is definitely the busiest month of the year and because the territory is so small, you can’t escape the crowds. Cruise passengers, holidaymakers, day trippers from Spain and locals off work all contribute to the busyness and sometimes overwhelming beaches, streets and attractions.
Who August in Gibraltar is Best For
Sunseekers, beach lovers and social travellers who don’t mind heat and a bit of chaos!
Downsides to Gibraltar in August
It’s hot. Like, really hot! Plus, the cable car gets rammed and walking around in the middle of the day heat can be overwhelming, and that’s putting it mildly!
Katie’s Top Tip: If you’re visiting Gibraltar in August, plan your sightseeing for early mornings or evenings – and spend midday under an umbrella on the beach! I’ll also let you in on a bit of a local secret here: the Alameda Gardens are underrated all year round (busy but not intense), and they offer shade which is lacking in Gibraltar. I used to head there with a book a lot in August!

Autumn in Gibraltar: September to November
Autumn in Gibraltar is the ultimate season of balance. You’ve still got the sunshine, but with cooler, less stifling temperatures. The summer crowds start to thin, prices lower, and the whole territory begins to feel more relaxed and local again. It’s an underrated season, in my opinion!
Gibraltar’s Autumn Vibe
After the summer chaos, and especially after National Day in early September, everything slows down a bit. The cafés are still lively, the weather is still good and there are still people on the beaches (in September and even sometimes in October), but the mood is calmer.
Gibraltar’s Autumn Weather
Gibraltar’s autumn weather is generally warm but much more pleasant than summer, with sunshine most days, especially in September and October. Rain starts to return more frequently in November.
Gibraltar’s Autumn Temperatures
Autumn temperatures average between 14–26°C across the three months – which is the biggest seasonal fluctuation. September still feels summery, while November has more early spring-like temperatures.
Events in Gibraltar in Autumn
National Day in September is Gibraltar’s biggest celebration of the year. October and November are quieter in terms of events, apart from during the October school break.
Crowds in Gibraltar in Autumn
September is still fairly busy, especially early in the month for National Day. But from mid-September onwards, it calms down a lot. And by November, you’ll once again have many of the attractions to yourself.
Who Autumn in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers looking for warmth and good weather, but without the price tag or the busyness of summer.
Downsides to Gibraltar in Autumn
While September and October are generally dry, November is a bit unpredictable weather-wise. Some tours also start to wind down their frequency by late autumn.
Katie’s Top Tip: If you want warm weather without peak season crowds, autumn is one of the best times to visit Gibraltar. I would aim for late September or early October for the sweet spot!

Gibraltar in September
September is one of Gibraltar’s most exciting and underrated months. The weather and temperatures still feel like summer, but the vibe is much calmer. The first half of the month includes Gibraltar’s biggest celebration, National Day, while the second half tends to be quieter, cheaper and more relaxed. So it depends what type of trip you’re looking for.
Gibraltar’s September Vibe
September starts off with a party atmosphere thanks to National Day on the 10th. The streets and locals are dressed in red and white and there are street celebrations, live music and fireworks. But after National Day, things slow down and the pace becomes much more enjoyable for relaxed travel.
Gibraltar’s September Weather
Still summery! Most days are sunny with only 8 days of rain on average. But the humidity can actually be worse in September than it is in August, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Gibraltar’s September Temperatures
Average daily temperatures in September range between 20–26°C, with a mean temperature of around 23°C, so you’ll still want plenty of sun cream and short sleeves.
Events in Gibraltar in September
Gibraltar National Day is the standout event in September. It happens every year on the 10th (which is an official public holiday in Gibraltar), and involves a huge celebration of the territory’s unique identity.
Crowds in Gibraltar in September
Early September is still busy, especially around National Day. But after that, crowds drop off significantly and prices become more affordable.
Who September in Gibraltar is Best For
Culture lovers and any solo traveller who doesn’t mind a little leftover summer buzz, as long as they get beach days and sunshine too!
Downsides to Gibraltar in September
Accommodation and flights can still be pricey in the first half of the month due to National Day, and it’s worth booking early if you’re visiting around then, because most accommodation will sell out.
Katie’s Top Tip: If you’re keen to experience National Day, make sure you plan your trip for the few days either side of the 10th – just be prepared for busy!

Gibraltar in October
October is such a hidden gem month in Gibraltar. And it’s also my second favourite month after May! It’s still warm, the sea is still just about swimmable, and the crowds have thinned dramatically (apart from the week of the schools’ October half term). Wins all round!
Gibraltar’s October Vibe
Calm, warm and once again very local. October in Gibraltar feels like you’ve got the last hints of summer all to yourself, with the locals of course! The streets and outdoor dining venues are still lively, but not hectic.
Gibraltar’s October Weather
Sunshine is still common in October, with an average of 11 rainy days across the month. But in my experience, the rain in October more often comes in short showers rather than all-day downpours.
Gibraltar’s October Temperatures
In October you can expect average temperatures of 17–23°C, with a mean of 20°C. Mornings and evenings will feel cooler, but most days are still perfect for outdoor exploring or even the beach. Plus, in October the Upper Rock becomes way less uncomfortable to visit, thanks to the drop in temperature!
Events in Gibraltar in October
There are no major public events after Gibraltar went all out for National Day, but it’s still worth checking the local calendar – especially around the October school holidays and Halloween.
Crowds in Gibraltar in October
Lower. The cruise ship schedule starts to slow down and day trippers ease off, making even popular spots like the Top of the Rock far less busy. You most likely won’t have to queue in October.
Who October in Gibraltar is Best For
Solo travellers who want warmth and sunshine without crowds.
Downsides to Gibraltar in October
Some tours start to reduce their frequency or even stop running entirely as the season winds down, so check availability in advance.
Katie’s Top Tip: October is another great month to do the Upper Rock Med Steps hike. It’s cool enough to climb without overheating and you won’t be stuck in a queue behind cruise ship groups.

Gibraltar in November
November in Gibraltar feels like the start of the slower, quieter season, but not in a bad way. In fact, as a local it always feels like quite a relief after the busyness of the summer and National Day! Don’t expect a buzzing tourist scene in November, but you can still expect mild days, quiet streets and good deals to be had during Black Friday.
Gibraltar’s November Vibe
Once again Gibraltar feels very local, more like a small community than a tourist destination. November is ideal for slow mornings, people-watching in cafes and exploring the best of the Gibraltar without crowds.
Gibraltar’s November Weather
This is the start of Gibraltar’s rainier period, with around 13 days of rain on average. But you’ll definitely still get sunny days – just not every day. Pack a raincoat just in case!
Gibraltar’s November Temperatures
November temperatures average between 14–19°C, with a mean of 17°C. I was still wearing short sleeves a lot, but mornings and evenings definitely feel chillier.
Events in Gibraltar in November
November is generally quiet for events, although you might catch Black Friday or the start of Gibraltar’s Christmas prep at the very end of the month.
Crowds in Gibraltar in November
Very low. November is a great time to visit Gibraltar without crowds!
Who November in Gibraltar is Best For
Travellers who want peace and don’t mind a slightly increased chance of rain. It’s a great time for slow travel and exploring the nature reserve.
Downsides to Gibraltar in November
Some businesses reduce hours in November and the weather can be hit or miss.
Katie’s Top Tip: If you’re visiting in November, check out the Gibraltar Museum for an indoor activity, or do a walking tour if the weather is good. It’s the perfect month to learn about the territory’s culture and history!

Climate in Gibraltar by Month
Want a snapshot of Gibraltar’s seasons at a glance? Here’s what you can generally expect month by month:
January: Cool, quiet and rainy
February: Windy, quiet and rainy
March: Milder, still some rain, but spring is definitely on the way
April: Sunnier, more events, starting to get warmer
May: Sunny, not too hot and my personal favourite month to visit Gibraltar

The Best Time to Visit Gibraltar Without Crowds
If you want to visit Gibraltar without crowds, aim for winter, spring or autumn. But in particular January, February, March and November. These are the quietest months of the year, with noticeably fewer tourists, empty viewpoints, no queues at the cable car and cheaper prices.
But if you want the sweet spot between crowd-free exploring and decent weather? Go for early May or early October.
The Cheapest Time to Visit Gibraltar
If you’re a budget-conscious traveller, the cheapest time to visit Gibraltar is in winter, specifically January or February. These two months have the lowest accommodation prices, off-peak flight deals and also smaller crowds.
So, When is the Best Time to Visit Gibraltar?
I’m gonna be honest with you: there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the best time to visit Gibraltar, because it really depends on what you want from the trip:
- Want guaranteed sunshine, nightlife and lively energy? Go for July or August.
- Prefer a bit more peace, great walking weather and more affordable prices? Choose May or October.
- Looking to escape winter gloom, a cheaper break and don’t mind a few grey or rainy skies? Try January or February.
But for most travellers, I would personally recommend May as the best overall month (and my favourite!), closely followed by October. They both hit the sweet spot of good weather, a social atmosphere, fewer crowds and plenty to do – all without the chaos (or heat!) of summer.
So before you book, take 10 minutes to jot down what matters most to you – is it sunshine? Peace and quiet? Good walking weather? Then match your month to your mood using this guide. That’s how you find your true best time to visit Gibraltar!
