Seeing the cherry blossoms in Southern Sweden was one of the most unexpected but beautiful spring trips I’ve ever taken – and the best part is how easy, free and quiet it was!

I saw the famous, pastel-pink blooms in both Malmö and the underrated university city of Lund in late April, without tour buses, tickets, or crowds of fellow tourists.

So if you’re dreaming of seeing spectacular spring scenery, but don’t want the busyness of places like Amsterdam or Copenhagen, southern Sweden is such a hidden gem.

In this guide, I’ll share the best spots to see the cherry blossoms, my top tips for timing your trip right for peak bloom, and how to plan your own calm spring getaway!

When Is Cherry Blossom Season in Southern Sweden?

Sweden’s cherry blossom season falls between late March and early May, with the sweet spot being the last two weeks of April.

Southern cities warm up earlier than places in the north, for example Stockholm, which is why cherry blossoms in southern Sweden bloom first and last slightly longer.

The only thing that could change this is the weather.

A cold winter can push the peak back to early May, while early warm weather can bring them forward by a few weeks, so it is important to keep an eye on the forecasts before your trip.

Why Southern Sweden Is Perfect in Spring

Southern Sweden in spring genuinely feels like Europe’s hidden gem!

You still see those stunning pastel-pink blooms – but without the crowds or price spikes you’ll find in more famous blossom destinations like Japan or Copenhagen.

When I visited, it felt calm instead of busy and touristy, and that made a huge difference to how much I actually enjoyed the experience!

I’d just come from seeing the cherry blossoms in Copenhagen, where every pretty street or park seemed to be full of fellow tourists also wanting to capture the blooms.

But crossing into Sweden was the exact opposite.

The blossoms didn’t feel like an attraction for tourists, but a look at real, local life.

There were people out walking their dogs, students enjoying the green spaces and sunshine, and locals enjoying the return of outdoor coffee culture.

It felt refreshingly normal, and that’s what I loved so much!

Cherry Blossoms in Lund

Lund is a small university city that has that beautiful, storybook European charm.

Even on a quick walk through the old centre, you’ll see cobbled streets, bicycles everywhere, and charming old buildings mixed with a modern buzz from the student population!

And because the centre is so compact, you can easily explore every blossom spot I’m about to share on foot in one day (or even in just half a day, if you’re short on time).

But I would recommend you spend longer here – at least one full day – and really relax into the pace of life of this gorgeous, underrated Swedish city!

Lund Botanical Garden

Lund Botanical Garden is free, peaceful, and one of the easiest places to enjoy spring in Sweden without complicated logistics or crowds of tourists.

Plus, during blossom season you won’t only see the famous cherry trees – there are also tulips, magnolias, daffodils and fresh greenery everywhere!

So even if your timing for the peak blossom season is slightly off, the visit is still worth it!

But what I loved most was how relaxing it was inside the walls of the garden.

There are loads of benches scattered around to rest on and, even when I visited in late April (aka peak blossom season), it never felt busy or overwhelming.

I sat in Lund Botanical Garden for most of the morning, looking out at the spring blooms, taking photos, reading, and just enjoying a break from the bustle of the city.

There are also quiet walking paths throughout the garden, where you can stroll in peace.

Katie’s Top Tip: I would recommend you spend at least an hour relaxing in Lund Botanical Garden, as well as spending time admiring (and photographing!) the beautiful spring blooms. I personally spent the whole morning there, and could’ve spent longer if I didn’t want to explore more of beautiful Lund!

Lund Cathedral

Lund Cathedral is one of the oldest and most recognisable buildings in the city, and it just so happens to be surrounded by a beautiful park called Lundagård.

Lundagård Park is also home to a number of other important buildings, including Kungshuset, the Lund Historical Museum, and the main University building.

And, of course, the park also has some seriously beautiful cherry blossom trees!

Although the park is right in the heart of the city centre and doesn’t have the privacy of the botanical garden, it is still open, shady, and peaceful to explore.

There are plenty of benches for you to sit and relax, as you admire the beautiful blooms against the backdrop of some of Lund’s most impressive buildings!

Plus, the area has a more social atmosphere and feels very comfortable to sit in, surrounded by charming cafes and small shops, so you never feel isolated.

Lund Old Town (Hjortgatan Street)

Lund Old Town is full of colourful houses along quiet, residential lanes. But there is one particular street that deserves all the fame in spring, thanks to its beautiful blossoms.

Hjortgatan Street is lined with pastel houses and has the most beautiful blossoming tree, right on the street corner.

It’s not a long street, but you’ll definitely want to slow down to admire the view!

But aside from being so beautiful, what I loved most was how residential and calm it feels.

There were no tourist crowds or the feeling of constantly getting in the way of someone else’s photoshoot. Instead, it feels like you stumbled across an authentic secret!

I highly recommend you take some time to wander the streets of Lund Old Town, without a map or any real plan, to see what other hidden gems you stumble across.

How to Get to Lund

The closest major airport is actually Copenhagen Airport in Denmark, not Sweden!

From the airport, you can hop straight onto a direct train to Lund that takes around 30–55 minutes, runs regularly throughout the day, and doesn’t require any transfers.

Everything is clearly signposted in English and the trains are clean, safe, and easy to navigate – even with luggage.

Or, if you’re already in Sweden, trains from cities like Stockholm or Gothenburg also run to Lund Central Station, which is right in the heart of the city.

But regardless of how you arrive, once you’re in Lund, you can walk almost everywhere (including the main spots for cherry blossoms in Lund!) within 10–20 minutes.

Where to Stay in Lund

Lund is small enough that you don’t really need to obsess over neighbourhoods.

But staying in the city centre or close to Lund Central Station will make your trip easier, as you’ll be within easy walking distance of the cathedral, old town, and botanical garden.

Hotel Lundia is a really good mid-range choice right by the train station.

Alternatively, Grand Hotel Lund is a beautiful, historic option in the city centre if you want something more classic and bucket-list worthy!

Cherry Blossoms in Malmö

While Lund wins for fairytale charm, seeing the cherry blossoms in Malmö is perfect if you want that bigger-city energy, waterfront walks, and more variety in things to do.

Malmö is larger and more modern, but still very relaxed by European city standards!

What makes it a great base for cherry blossoms in southern Sweden is that balance, as you get to enjoy the beautiful spring scenery without compromising on good restaurants, shopping, or convenience.

The blossoms in Malmö appear in parks, gardens and scattered around the old city, so you can explore as you wish and naturally stumble across them!

Slottsträdgården

Slottsträdgården is one of Malmö’s most peaceful outdoor spaces and one of my favourite, underrated spots for cherry blossoms in Sweden!

It’s a free community garden tucked beside Malmö Castle, filled with different coloured blossoms, tulips, vegetable patches, and little themed gardens that locals help maintain.

The atmosphere is calm and welcoming rather than anything manicured or formal.

I recommend you wander through the small garden “rooms,” then walk around the nearby lake, before relaxing on one of the many benches dotted throughout the park and garden.

Plus, if the Sweden cherry blossom season is slightly early or late, you’ll still see plenty of other spring blooms here, which makes it a safe bet regardless of exact timings!

Malmö City

Malmö’s old town doesn’t have endless blossoms or even one standout street, but that’s exactly why I really loved exploring it!

Instead, you’ll have to wander where your feet take you and stumble across the occasional cherry blossom tree dotted between colourful buildings, in a quiet square or by a lake.

It feels more spontaneous, rather than following a checklist of places to visit.

The area around Lilla Torg Square is especially lovely for a slow, relaxed walk. And this is also where I had the most success stumbling across beautiful blossoms in Malmö.

How to Get to Malmö

Just like Lund, the easiest way to get to Malmö is by flying into Copenhagen Airport.

From there, you then take a direct train across the famous Öresund Bridge that takes around 25 minutes, runs regularly throughout the day, and involves no transfers.

If you’re already travelling within Sweden, Malmö is also well connected by long-distance trains to cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Once you arrive, public transport is reliable, but you’ll likely walk most of the time anyway, as the city centre is compact, flat and easy to navigate!

Where to Stay in Malmö

The best areas to stay are near Malmö Central Station, the Old Town (Gamlastaden), and around Lilla Torg square.

These neighbourhoods are all well-lit, lively without feeling overwhelming, and within walking distance of the best things to do, blossom spots, restaurants, and transport.

MJ’s Hotel is a stylish, boutique hotel right in the heart of the old town.

Alternatively, Clarion Hotel Malmö Live is excellent if you prefer something more modern and nearer to the train station. Plus, it offers beautiful waterfront views!

Final Thoughts: Is Seeing Cherry Blossoms in Southern Sweden Worth It?

If you love spring travel but don’t love sharing beauty spots with lots of fellow tourists, seeing cherry blossoms in southern Sweden is absolutely worth it!

Seeing the cherry blossoms isn’t about visiting one famous photo spot or ticking off stops on your travel bucket list, but enjoying Malmö and Lund’s open, green spaces the way locals do.

The pastel pink blossom trees just exist, rather than being turned into an attraction.

And the spaces around them are equally beautiful in their own right – perfect for a relaxed walk, a slow morning with a takeaway coffee, or reading a book in a quiet park.

Malmö gives you convenience and a variety of things to do, while Lund gives you storybook charm and quieter streets – but together they make for the perfect spring getaway!
